Research Project

Upper Pleistocene Archaeology of the Balkans

Summary

The Balkans is one of the key areas in which to investigate Neanderthal occupations and the emergence of early Homo sapiens in Europe, yet, the Palaeolithic record in the region is relatively sparse. In 2012, in collaboration with Dušan Mihailović (Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade), we initiated a survey to discover Pleistocene human occupations in caves and rock-shelters in eastern Serbia.

We recorded nearly 40 locations, and test excavations of four locations in 2013 revealed Palaeolithic artefacts in two cave sites, Bukovac and Orlovača. These two sites together document successive Middle Palaeolithic, Aurignacian and Gravettian horizons, including sporadic early Holocene occupations. They form the basis of a long-term interdisciplinary project that will provide a reliable chronology for human occupations, reconstruct climatic and environmental contexts, and elucidate the nature of human occupations during these periods.
