CELTIC GOLD: Fine metal work in the Western La Tène culture
The CELTIC GOLD project is characterised by interdisciplinary research in the field of precious metal objects of the Iron Age and follows on seamlessly from the results of a previous ANR/DFG project "Rethinking earliest Celtic gold" (2012-2015). Both projects combine archaeological, technological and metallurgical aspects in order to shed light on Celtic art and craft from all sides. Within the project, gold objects of the later Iron Age will be analysed with regard to their chemical composition, technologically examined and stylistically compared in order to gain information about the extraction, processing, use and final function of gold objects in graves and hoards. The aim is to understand the development of the art of the goldsmith and its significance for social, economic and cultural contacts during the Iron Age.
