Research Project

Germanic princely tombs of the Roman imperial period

Situated between the Roman Empire and the Germanic environment

Summary

The aim of this project – based on the analysis of the important site of Zakrzów/Sakrau – is to contextualise lavishly appointed Germanic graves of the later Roman imperial period on three levels in order to gain information on the emergence of Germanic elites and their integration into an international network.

The “princely graves” in their regional setting:

An investigation into the history of settlement intends to clarify the milieu in which the graves originated.

Relations with the Roman Empire:

The importation and use of the luxury goods in the Germanic environment will be discussed here, while the adoption of pictorial motifs and their implementation will also play an important role.

Supra-regional comparison:

By comparing the burials with other contemporaneous “princely tombs”, the integration of the burials into a wide-ranging “communication network” of barbarian elites will be analysed on the one hand while, on the other, regional peculiarities will be highlighted.
