The significance of Celtic art for elite representation, religion and identities

5th–1st century B.C.

Summary

The study of Celtic art has undergone a renewal in recent decades as semiotic approaches have been attempted, a new generation of researchers has emerged and art has secured its status as a research subject. Nevertheless, fundamental questions remain unanswered: What do the motifs depicted mean? How can the change or the retreat of Celtic art in the course of the Latène period be explained? Initial theses proposed in lectures and at conferences now await further discussion.

The subject of Celtic art is examined from several aspects: What are the meanings of the basic symbols in the early Latène world? Which pictorial elements continued to be handed down over the centuries? In what context did Late Latène art, which has received little attention so far, develop? Early Latène art in particular – figurative representations as well as ornaments – has so far rarely been addressed. Celtic art here is part of self-assertion strategies vis-à-vis the Roman imagery, but these are only realised in selected groups of objects.

Within the framework of the investigations on Celtic art, it is possible to draw on the collection of the Leibniz-Zentrum für Archäologie (copies) and the picture archive, both of which provide rich material due to the restoration work of recent decades.
