Research Project

Finds of silver coins in the north-western provinces of the Roman Empire (4th-6th century AD)

Summary

Silver – whether in the form of coins, ingots or tableware – played an essential role in the transitional phase from the Roman to the Germanic coinage economy. Nevertheless, there is still no comprehensive inventory of silver coin finds, which have received too little attention as an archaeological source. Within the framework of the ITAM (Inventaire des Trouvailles d’Argent Monnayé) project, all silver coins of the 4th to 6th centuries AD that have come to light in France (north of the Loire), Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Germany (west of the Rhine) will be recorded.

The corpus of finds is to be published as an electronic catalogue and go online via the Coin Finds Portal “Nummus” developed by the Service de numismatique of the University of Caen Normandie (Dr. Pierre-Marie Guihard). The database is designed as a tool for further research: images, mapping of the finds and information on the find context will provide a variety of research opportunities to expand knowledge of late Roman or early medieval silver money. Too seldom can the minting place, circulation and dating of many Frankish silver coins, which often occur in Merovingian cemeteries in the Rhineland (e.g. Wölfersheim-Berstadt), be adequately determined. With the ITAM portal, comparative material from older and more recent finds will be made accessible to enable a precise determination of the individual coins.

Silver money at the transition from Antiquity to the Early Middle Ages has already been addressed in the international colloquium “Argentum Romanorum sive Barbarorum”, which took place in October 2017 at the University of Caen Normandie and was organised by the Centre Michel de Boüard-CRAHAM and the RGZM (the proceedings were published in the series “RGZM Tagungen” 41 ). Both institutions, which concluded a cooperation agreement in 2016, work closely together in research and education in the subject of numismatics.
