The Cenomani in Northern Italy: From Celtic Invaders to Roman Citizens

Ein Vortrag von Dr. Fabio Saccoccio (University of Nottingham, UK) in der Reihe "Mainzer Vorträge zur Römischen Archäologie" (MaVRA).

This lecture is based on research conducted as a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in the Department of Classics and Archaeology at the University of Nottingham (UK). The project explored the underexamined presence of the Celtic Cenomani tribe in northern Italy.

Despite being one of the four major Transalpine tribes to invade northern Italy in the mid-1st millennium BC, the Cenomani have received relatively little scholarly attention. According to Livy, they settled between Brescia and Verona, with Brescia as their tribal capital. However, ancient sources disagree on key details, such as whether their arrival occurred around 600 BC or 400 BC, and offer little information beyond the fact that the Cenomani, alongside the Veneti, allied with Rome when called upon to fight against other Celtic tribes in northern Italy.

This lecture seeks to provide a deeper understanding of the Cenomani’s role in northern Italy’s historical and cultural landscape during the late 1st millennium BC, integrating literary sources with archaeological evidence. Key questions include:

  • When did the Cenomani arrive in Italy?
  • Where did they originate, and which Alpine passes did they use?
  • How does archaeology define their identity and interactions with Italic communities, Celtic tribes, and Rome?
  • How were they integrated into the Roman world?
