How to get there

Take Your Time—Mainz Isn’t in a Hurry
Mainz is the kind of city that rewards lingering. Best explored on foot, it offers the kind of charm that doesn’t announce itself but reveals—quietly, steadily—with every step. The city is a palimpsest: one moment you’re peering into the Sanctuary of Isis and Magna Mater, unearthed beneath a modern shopping arcade; the next, you’re standing between a romanesque cathedral and a contemporary art installation tucked inside an old customs depot.

A Simple, Elegant Compass
Lost? Mainz has you covered—with a bit of old-fashioned brilliance. In the city centre, street signs are colour-coded to help even the most directionally challenged find their way:
- Streets that run alongside the Rhine are marked in blue.
- Those that lead away from the river are marked in red.
It’s a simple system—and frankly, more stylish than GPS. A civic flourish from another century, still doing its job with quiet confidence.
