The monumental center of a Romano-Punic city: reconstructing the public architecture at Tharros, Sardinia

Ein Vortrag von Prof. Dr. Eric Poehler (University of Massachusetts Amherst, USA) in der Reihe "Mainzer Vorträge zur Römischen Archäologie" (MaVRA).

Since its initial excavation in the 1950s and 1960s, the monumental center of Tharros, Sardinia has been equally one of the most important and difficult to understand areas of the archaeological site. Due to the combined influences of ancient architectural reconfigurations, post antique spoliation, and 20th century excavation methods, most subsequent interpretive efforts have focused on the Roman period building, called a Capitolium or more generally a tetrastyle temple. None of these efforts have led to consensus on the shape of this building. Even less attention has been paid to the numerous Punic era buildings that preceded the Roman structure. Since 2019, the Tharros Archaeological Research Project has excavated in several areas of the archaeological site. Our research in the monumental center now shows there were at least four other major buildings in this area, as well as the fragments of walls and floors that hint at still earlier structures. This paper discusses our findings, including the most recent discoveries from the 2026 field season.

This paper discusses the work of the Tharros Archaeological Research Project, which has excavated the city’s monumental center in order to reconstruct its lost Punic and Roman structures.
